Christmas Cactus Tree Decoration

What you’ll need

  • US 2 (3mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn A: Approx 50g of green DK yarn
  • Yarn B: Small quantity of black yarn
  • Miniature multicoloured pom poms – I get mine here (alternatively you can use beads or sequins for the lights)
  • Acrylic toy stuffing – I get mine here
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Ribbon
  • Metal 8mm jump ring and jewellery pliers (optional)

Abbreviations

  • Ch – Chain
  • SS – Slip Stitch
  • SC – Single crochet
  • SC Inc – Two single crochet stitches in the same stitch
  • SC 3 Inc – Three single crochet stitches in the same stitch
  • SC 5 Inc – Five single crochet stitches in the same stitch
  • FO – Fasten off

Notes:

Dimensions: 5 inches (height) x 3 inches (width)at widest point.

Difficulty: Intermediate/ experienced crocheter

Time to create: 2 hours

Two sides of the cactus are made and are crocheted together to create the keyring.

For the purposes of this pattern the chain stitches do not count as stitches.

Both chart and written instructions have been used to make this pattern as easy as possible to follow.

Pattern – make 2

Body 

Using yarn A:

Ch 22 stitches

Row 1: In 2nd Ch from hook, SC 20.

In the last stitch of the chain row SC 5 Inc,

SC 20 on the other side of the Ch. Ch 1 and turn. (45)

Row 2: SC 20, SC Inc, SC, SC 3 Inc, SC, SC Inc, SC 20. Ch 1 and turn. (49)

Row 3: SC 20, SC Inc, SC 3, SC Inc, SC 3, SC Inc, SC 20 (52)

CO.

Right arm 

On right side of the cactus body, attach yarn at stitch 14

Row 1: CH 1 and SC in the 14th stitch, SC 4 towards the bottom of the cactus, CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: SC 5, CH 5 and turn

Row 3: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 1, SC 8, CH 1 and turn

Row 4: SC 9

FO.

Left arm 

On left side of the cactus body, attach yarn at stitch 10

Row 1: CH 1 and SC in the 10th stitch, SC 4 towards the bottom of cactus, CH 1 and turn

Row 2: SC 5, CH 5 and turn

Row 3: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 1, SC 8, CH 1 and turn

Row 4: SC 9

FO.

Weave in all ends.

Repeat above steps so you have two identical pieces.

Assembly

Place the two sides of the cactus directly on top of each other

Attach yarn to bottom left corner as indicated below

Ch and SC in the first stitch.

SC together both sides of the cactus, stuffing arms and body as you go. SS to the first stitch to finish.

Note: as you crochet both sides together, SC 3 Inc in each of the below indicated places.

  • Bottom corners of the cactus, corners of the cactus arms and the top of the cactus arms in between rows 3-4.

Christmas lights

Using yarn B and a tapestry needle:

Cut three strands of yarn B to approximately 15-20cm

Sew each strand diagonally around cactus as picture to create a string light effect. FO and weave in ends to the cactus.

Using hot glue gun and miniature pom poms attach the coloured “lights” to both sides of the cactus approximately 1cm apart.

These can be sewn in place if you prefer.

To finish your decoration take the metal jump ring and open this up using pliers, feed through the top of your cactus and close back up. Attach ribbon to the jump ring.

Alternative, you can attach the ribbon directly to the cactus.
